The Camp Cast

The American Camp Association Conference is wrapping up as we speak, and soon the next edition of The Camp Cast will be available. It will feature some short conversations with attendees and thoughts on how the event went! Stay tuned!

Gwynn Powell, Ph.D
Gwynn is an Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia in recreation and leisure studies. She is Chair of the National Conference Team (not the conference chair!) She discusses the topic of the conference, keynote speakers, how to “dive, surf, or sun bathe” to get the most out of the week and points us to the ACA Web Site for even more details:

Becky Smith
Becky is a new year-round staff member at the YWCO in Athens, Georgia. She is excited to present two sessions at the conference, surf around, and connect with old and new friends!

On our second show we talk with Dr. Chris Thurber about technology policies at camp and Steve Silbermann gives us a great game to help bring groups together.

Dr. Chris Thurber
Chris is a licensed clinical psychologist, a camp consultant, a speaker and author of The Summer Camp Handbook. Chris discusses developing policies to handle technology at camp. How do you make a policy for iPods, cell phones, or the next big thing? How does this relate to your camp’s mission? Steve Silbermann
Steve is a skilled facilitator, camp staff member and emergency services specialist with many years of camp under his belt. He describes a game called “Have You Ever?” It allows campers or staff (or the folks around the office) to share experiences and learn more about each other in a safe and fun way. No special equipment necessary (except maybe a back pocket to keep this game in!)

On this week’s show we hear from André Brewer about the ACA National Board meeting in October… Faith Evans (faithevans@aol.com) teaches us a quick game to help people get to know one another… Eric Ikari tells some pirate jokes (ARRR!)… Tommy covers upcoming events…

André is the director of Camp Lincoln for Boys in Lake Hubert, Minnesota. He is also a member of the ACA National Board and serves on the ACA Young Professionals Committee.

She has been recognized by the American Camp Association for her outstanding staff training and for excellence in writing through numerous articles published in Camping Magazine. Faith is co-author of “99 of the Best Corporate Experiential Games We Know” and new this year “The More the Merrier: Leading Large Group Games.”
